Like you, I am a professional with a desire to market my expertise and make meaningful, profitable use of my time. As a medical doctor, I have undertaken a significant amount of temporary work—commonly known in medical circles as locum tenens. Through this experience, it became clear that while locum work is both practical and essential to continuity of care, it is often poorly organised.
This lack of structure has, in many settings, led healthcare facilities to lose confidence in the locum system, viewing it as a last resort rather than a reliable solution. Yet locum tenens exists precisely to ensure continuity in healthcare delivery during the temporary absence of a primary provider. One of the major concerns relates to governance and accountability. In some contexts, locum doctors can operate on the fringes of formal systems, with limited oversight regarding treatment outcomes, procedures, or prescriptions. Because locum shifts are often filled at short notice, facilities may have little time to conduct thorough background checks and instead rely heavily on word of mouth. The consequences can be significant: gaps in competence or familiarity with facility systems may lead to unnecessary referrals, reduced service capacity, and lost revenue for facilities that might otherwise manage these cases effectively.
Locum work is rightly viewed by many professionals as a secondary source of income. What is unfortunate, however, is the assumption that financial motivation is the only driver. In reality, most locum professionals value professionalism, responsibility, and impact just as much. Recognising this disconnect highlighted a clear need for a service that could bridge the gap between healthcare professionals and the institutions and individuals who rely on them.
That realisation is what led me to put pen to paper. Two questions emerged. First: must this solution be confined within the four walls of a healthcare facility? And second: could other professional services, facing similar challenges of availability and continuity, also benefit from the principles underlying locum tenens?
What began as a personal reflection has since grown into Locum Professionals—an online, digital platform designed to connect validated professionals with clients who require their expertise for temporary, short-term, or one-time engagements. Building this service has been as challenging as it has been rewarding. Yet seeing how Locum Professionals has helped individuals rethink the value of their time and expertise—while supporting continuity across healthcare and other professional services—has confirmed that there could be no better use of my own.
I encourage you to continue striving to be the best version of yourself, and we’ll Be There to set up that meeting between You and Opportunity.
